Battery Recycling & Disposal for Businesses

Batteries are the part of an IT clearance most companies aren’t set up to handle — they can’t go in general waste, most recyclers won’t touch them, and the rules differ by chemistry. CITD provides certified battery recycling and disposal for businesses, schools, universities and public sector organisations across England, Scotland and Wales: from a single UPS unit to full server-room battery banks and bulk industrial quantities, processed at our Environment Agency licensed facility with up to 100% material recovery — achieved on most battery types we handle.

Accreditation

ISO 9001:2015 & ISO 14001:2015 certified (Citation, certificate no. 336722020, valid to 2029), Cyber Essentials Plus, ICO registered (ZA246798) and fully UK GDPR compliant. Data erasure with Blancco, ADISA-certified software. Environment Agency licensed — Upper Tier Waste Carrier CBDU457411, Waste Storage Licence WEX476602 — with all staff BS 7858:2019 security vetted.
Certificates available on our licenses page or on request.

Battery Recycling & Disposal for Businesses

What We Recycle

  • UPS systems and server room backup batteries — single units to complete battery strings and cabinets, including decommissioning and removal
  • Lead-acid and VRLA batteries — the workhorses behind most UPS and standby power systems
  • Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer packs — including bulk quantities of drone and multi-cell power packs
  • Specialist and non-standard cell sizes — we work with manufacturers and operators whose batteries don’t fit standard recycling streams
  • Alkaline, NiMH and NiCd — mixed office and equipment batteries
  • Standby generators and associated power equipment — decommissioned and disposed of alongside your battery systems

We can handle most battery chemistry types. Not sure whether yours qualifies? Send us the details — chemistry, size and quantity if you know them, a photo if you don’t — and we’ll confirm before you book.

Server Rooms, Data Centres and UPS Replacement

Battery replacement is routine maintenance for any server room — but the old string doesn’t disappear on its own. We remove and recycle complete UPS battery sets during your maintenance window, with out-of-hours and weekend scheduling available, and we regularly clear battery banks as part of full data centre decommissioning projects. If you’re replacing like-for-like, we can schedule collection to coincide with your installer’s visit, so old batteries never sit on site. School and university estates run on the same maintenance cycles — for education clients we can schedule battery and UPS collections into holiday periods, with purchase orders accepted.

Safe Handling of batteries by our team and Full Compliance recycling

Safe Handling, Full Compliance

Batteries — lithium chemistries especially — need proper handling in storage and transit. Our teams collect using our own vehicles and trained, BS 7858-vetted staff, with batteries segregated by chemistry and packaged for safe transport. Everything is processed at our Environment Agency licensed facility (Upper Tier Waste Carrier CBDU457411), and you receive a waste transfer note and disposal certificate for your compliance records — plus an Environmental Impact / ESG Report on request showing exactly what was recovered.

What Happens to Your Batteries

In most cases, 100% of the material is recovered: metals return to manufacturing, and recovered materials re-enter the supply chain rather than landfill — consistent with our policy that nothing we collect goes to landfill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — we take complete UPS units, cabinets and battery strings, including removal and decommissioning of the hardware itself.
Most chemistries: lead-acid and VRLA, lithium-ion and lithium-polymer, NiMH, NiCd and alkaline, in standard and specialist cell sizes. If you’re unsure, contact us with the details and we’ll confirm.
Yes — from single units to bulk industrial volumes, including large quantities of multi-cell packs such as drone batteries.
Battery collections are quoted based on chemistry, quantity and location — send us your list and we’ll confirm the cost, or whether it qualifies for free collection alongside a larger IT clearance, before you book.
