The Challenge

Children’s Personal Data

Laptop and desktop drives held pupil records, safeguarding logs and staff HR data covered by UK GDPR that had to be provably destroyed.

An Enrolled iPad Fleet

51 iPads had to be checked for Apple School Manager enrolment and Activation Lock, then released cleanly so they held no residual account or data.

Summer Window

The clearance had to run in the first days of the summer break, around a site full of contractors, and be closed before the new term.

Full Compliance

UK GDPR, safeguarding duty of care and the WEEE Duty of Care all had to be satisfied, with certificates and a serialised audit trail as evidence.

Our Solution: End-to-End IT Recycling Process

1. Planning

Collection booked for the start of the summer break, with laptops, iPads, AV and desktops scheduled into one visit.

2. On-Site Audit

All 232 items logged and counted onto the Waste Transfer Note; iPads and managed laptops flagged for deprovisioning.

3. Secure Collection

Loaded by our own BS 7858-screened team into a GPS-tracked vehicle — one unbroken chain of custody.

4. Data Destruction

Apple School Manager and MDM enrolment checked and cleared, then every laptop, iPad and desktop drive erased to HMG Infosec Standard No. 5, the UK Government standard, and certified per device.

5. Reuse & Recycling

Erased devices with working life left refurbished for reuse — the lowest-carbon outcome; projectors and the rest recovered for materials. 100% diverted from landfill.

6. Certification

WEEE Disposal and Data Destruction Certificates issued under one reference within five working days.

Environmental Impact

  • Erasure — not destruction — kept working laptops, iPads and desktops in circulation, the lowest-carbon end-of-life outcome.
  • Zero waste to landfill — 100% of collected equipment, including AV and projectors, diverted.
  • Recovered metals and plastics returned to the circular economy.
  • An ESG report provided for the school’s sustainability reporting and Climate Action Plan work.
