Greenwashing: The Hidden Danger

Consumers and business customers increasingly prefer sustainable providers, and some companies exploit that preference rather than earn it. A provider can market itself as an environmentally responsible electronic asset disposal service while quietly exporting old computers to countries with far weaker environmental protections — greenwashing is the gap between the marketing and what actually happens to your equipment.

How to Spot It

A few direct checks separate a genuine provider from one making claims it can’t support:

• Ask for a portfolio of past clients, and actually contact a few of them.
• Ask to visit the recycling facility, or request evidence of what happens there.
• Ask for certifications, and check them independently rather than taking a logo at face value.
• Ask specifically how data is destroyed, not just how equipment is “recycled.”
• Ask which components and device types they actually process, and confirm that matches what you need.

Illegal Export

Recycling responsibly costs money — specialised processing, licensed facilities, trained staff. Some providers cut that cost by exporting equipment overseas instead, particularly the categories that are hardest and most expensive to recycle properly, such as CRT monitors and televisions. Once it’s shipped, it’s out of the exporting business’s control, and frequently ends up dumped or burned rather than genuinely recycled.

Your Data Didn’t Die When the Computer Did

Deleting a file, or restoring a device to factory settings, doesn’t erase the underlying data — it just marks the space as available to be overwritten, and that data is often still recoverable. A “dead” server or a broken laptop can still hold payroll records, legal documents, trade secrets or client information exactly as it did the day before it stopped working.
