Shred when the media has failed and erasure can’t be verified, when your data destruction policy or your client’s contract requires physical destruction, or when the sensitivity of the data means only physical destruction gives your compliance team certainty. We collect your drives, loose or still in their machines, and take them under a documented chain of custody to our Environment Agency licensed facility, where they are logged by serial number and destroyed to the agreed size. Witnessed destruction at our facility can be arranged by appointment if your auditor wants to see it.

Every hard drive shredding job ends with the same evidence. Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, your organisation stays responsible for the data on every hard drive until it is provably destroyed. The National Cyber Security Centre’s guidance on secure sanitisation of storage media recommends physical destruction where data may remain after sanitisation, or where the data is especially sensitive.

The drives themselves are electrical waste, so they must be recycled under the WEEE Regulations and handed only to a licensed carrier under your Duty of Care. Drilling a hole or hitting a drive with a hammer can leave most of the platter surface intact and readable with laboratory tools, and it does nothing reliable to the memory chips in an SSD.
